Now Panizzi could take charge of building the catalog he wanted. To do so, he needed a new cataloging code.

Charles Ammi Cutter (1837–1903)- Rules for a Dictionary Catalogue 現在以1904年的修訂第四版為主

S. R. Ranganathan (1892–1972) 印度圖書館學家-圖書館五律,冒號分類法

The laws are:                       (圖書館五律)
• Books are for use.               圖書為使用而存在
• Every reader his book.           每一讀者有其書
• Every book its reader.           每一書有其讀者
• Save the time of the reader.     節省讀者時間
• Library is a growing organism.   圖書館是有個成長的有機體-最有爭論的

目錄的功能
Objects
1. To enable a person to find a book of which either
(A) the author
(B) the title    is known.
(C) the subject

2. To show what a library has
(D) by a given author
(E) on a given subject
(F) in a given kind of literature.

3. To assist in the choice of a book
(G) as to its edition (bibliographically).
(H) as to its character (literary or topical).

Means
1. Author-entry with the necessary references (for A and D).著者排列
2. Title-entry or title-reference (for B).書名排列
3. Subject-entry, cross-references, and classed subject table (for C and E).主題排列
4. Form-entry and language-entry (for F).語言排列
5. Giving edition and imprint, with notes when necessary (for G).版本項
6. Notes (for H).附註

20世紀和19世紀之間的差異,因為人與人之間的溝通方式產生了變化

• Cataloging costs money and takes time. Sharing cataloging records will save both, if everyone can agree on how to catalog things the same way.

   科技使圖書館變化很大

心得:
今天一開始,老師給我們看了好多的快閃影片,真的超有趣的!
接著上了一堂關於目錄的歷史課,好多的圖書館學家,好多年代....
學了很多,最熟悉的就是圖書館五律!
不同的老師,有不一樣的解釋,真的很有趣!
